Energy Efficient Upgrades for Your Kitchen

July 24, 2023 | Blog

Your kitchen uses a lot of energy every day. Although it may seem out of your control, there are a few ways that you can improve the energy efficiency of this space. If you’re looking to save money on your electricity bills while planning a kitchen remodel, we’re here to help.

At Legacy Bath & Kitchen, we’re committed to helping you improve your San Antonio home one renovation at a time. If you want to transform your existing kitchen into an energy-efficient space, here are a few different upgrades to consider.

Replace Your Windows

Even if they don’t have an energy-efficient design, any windows will help you save money on electricity. They bring in natural light which can reduce your dependence on electrical lighting. However, if you want to take your efficiency to another level, you should consider investing in energy-efficient windows.

Energy-efficient windows help you control the indoor temperature of your home through improved insulation. With extra panes or a special coating, these windows help regulate the temperature despite outdoor conditions. Simply resealing your windows can help reduce the amount of cool or warm air that is escaping through cracks.

Upgrade Your Lighting

Even if you have a lot of windows in your kitchen, you’ll need to have energy-efficient light bulbs for when it gets dark. Consider replacing the existing lighting in your kitchen with LED bulbs. These special bulbs release much less heat than incandescent lighting, which means that the temperature of your kitchen won’t be significantly affected by the light fixtures.

Another way to create a streamlined kitchen is to place each of your light fixtures on a separate circuit. If there are lights that you don’t need most of the day, you can leave them off, which saves money.

Upgrade Your Fridge

Believe it or not, the style of refrigerator that you purchase can make a big difference when it comes to efficiency. Typically, units with the freezer mounted above the refrigerator section are the most energy efficient options. This is because the compressor – located near the bottom of the unit – produces heat, which makes it harder to maintain cool temperatures.

When you purchase a refrigerator, look for the ENERGY STAR certification. Most fridges with this certification use less energy than a 60-watt light bulb. When you shop for a new unit, make sure to take into consideration how much space you’ll need and the individual needs of your household.

Replace Old Appliances

Over time, all kitchen appliances become less energy-efficient. Additionally, older appliances may use less energy-efficient components that have since been replaced with better alternatives. If you want to save on your utility costs, consider replacing any appliances that are over 10-15 years old.

Run The Dishwasher Less Frequently

It’s easy to run the dishwasher frequently if you have a large family, but it’s best to wait until it’s completely full before you do. If you need a certain dish before the dishwasher is full, consider hand washing it instead of running the dishwasher in order to save on electricity and water.
